Black Women Animate

Founded by visionary creative Taylor K. Shaw, leader in the world of conscious content, media, activism and empowering women—Black Women Animate is the first and only production company designed to improve the representation of black women in animation. While creating her own animated series, Taylor wanted to employ a team of black women animators but quickly realized her search would be more challenging than expected. She joined forces with Creative and Activist JLove Calderón to create BWA, a chance to help black women, women of color, and nonbinary artists of color in the world of animation obtain visibility and job opportunities. The members of Black Women Animate are committed to controlling their narratives and using their art to empower themselves and their community through visual media.

Free The Bid

A PLEDGE TO GIVE WOMEN DIRECTORS A VOICE IN ADVERTISING
The whole corporate world needs to fix its diversity issue – because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s a good idea for business. If creativity can be described as “thinking outside the box,” then it would seem obvious that diversity would only increase creativity. Embracing multiple genders, races, sexual orientations… all of these are important because they help to make companies and brands more creative, empathetic and representative of their customers and of society at large.

Great Women Animators

This database is dedicated to sharing the contributions and profiles of female* animators from the 1900s-present. Knowingly always in-process, the database is updated on a regular basis and intends to educate, disseminate and champion the work of an international group of women animators from the last century. The site provides brief profiles for further research and sharing. *Great Women Animators is trans-inclusive and includes women, trans and gender non-conforming animators.

Started and maintained by Heather Kai Smith, researcher and artist based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Posts also researched and contributed by Skye Lobell. Special thanks to Edwin Rostron, Adriana Baradri, Neal Moignard, and Quickdraw Animation Society for their support and contributions to this project.

Women Who Draw

Women Who Draw is an open directory of female* professional illustrators, artists and cartoonists who take freelance work. It was created by a group of women artists in an effort to increase the visibility of female illustrators, with an emphasis on female illustrators of color, LBTQ+, and other minority groups of female illustrators. We hope this directory will be used by publishers, art directors and editors to find less visible illustrators, and encourage them to work with these illustrators more frequently.
